Rapunzel Illustrated Book Cover | Hand-Drawn Fairy Tale Illustration

Hand-drawn illustrated book cover for Rapunzel, featuring flowing hair typography, textured tower walls, and a darker, symbolic interpretation of the classic fairy tale

Rapunzel — Illustrated Book Cover

This illustrated cover for Rapunzel reimagines the fairy tale by leaning into its darker, more unsettling origins, rather than a softened romantic retelling.

Concept and Typography

The hand-drawn title forms Rapunzel’s hair, flowing down the tower and becoming part of the narrative itself. By integrating the typography into the illustration, the title acts not just as text but as a symbol of entrapment, control, and longing for freedom. The hair becomes both a lifeline and a restraint, central to Rapunzel’s experience.

Colour and Texture

I used card-like, earthy tones for the tower wall to create a sense of rigidity and oppression. These colours and textures are intentionally firm and muted, reflecting the harshness, confinement, and cruelty present in the original tale. This choice moves away from traditional pastel or romantic palettes, instead grounding the story in its psychological weight.

Hand-Drawn Approach

All elements were hand-drawn, allowing for irregular line work and organic texture that reinforces the human, emotional quality of the story. This approach mirrors Rapunzel’s isolation and vulnerability, helping the reader feel the tension and imbalance at the heart of the narrative.

Intent

This cover was designed to appeal to readers who appreciate classic fairy tales in their original, complex form, highlighting themes of power, imprisonment, and resilience. The aim was to create a cover that feels timeless, symbolic, and emotionally honest, while remaining visually striking on the shelf.
