This illustrated cover for a Rumi poetry collection draws on the visual language of Islamic geometric patterns to reflect the spiritual depth, rhythm, and universality of Rumi’s work.

Concept and Symbolism

Islamic geometric patterns are rooted in repetition, balance, and infinity—ideas that closely mirror Rumi’s poetry and its exploration of divine love, inner transformation, and the infinite nature of the soul. The patterns symbolise the way Rumi’s words move in cycles: returning again and again to themes of love, surrender, and unity.

Rather than depicting Rumi literally, I chose abstraction as a way to honour the spiritual and timeless quality of his poetry. The geometry allows space for contemplation, inviting the reader inward rather than directing them toward a single narrative.

Hand-Drawn Process

All patterns were drawn by hand, not digitally generated. This intentional choice introduces subtle imperfections and warmth, reinforcing the human and devotional aspect of the work. The hand-drawn process reflects the idea that spiritual understanding is not mechanical or perfect, but deeply felt and lived.

Colour and Texture

The colour palette was chosen to evoke sacred spaces, manuscripts, and historical Islamic art, while remaining contemporary. Layered textures add depth and tactility, suggesting that Rumi’s poetry is something to be experienced slowly and repeatedly, much like the patterns themselves.

Intent

This cover was created to appeal to readers of poetry, spirituality, and classical literature, offering a design that feels reverent, thoughtful, and enduring. The aim was to create a book cover that communicates the emotional and spiritual resonance of Rumi’s work without illustration literalism, allowing the reader to bring their own interpretation to the text.
