working in my studio

Hello! I’m Nosheen, an award-winning illustrator creating hand-drawn work for the book world.

I specialise in illustration and book cover design that translates complex stories, ideas and emotions into a single image. My work is rooted in careful reading, listening and connection, finding what matters most in a story and honouring it visually.

I believe illustration works best when it feels human. That belief sits at the heart of everything I make.

My path into illustration hasn’t been linear.

For over twenty years I worked as a dentist, speaking to dozens of people every day, listening without judgement and learning how to communicate care, reassurance and trust. Over time, that way of connecting became as important to me as the clinical work itself.

Alongside this, I carried a lifelong love of books, drawing and storytelling. In my forties, I made the decision to step away from what I had to do and move towards what I was made to do — illustration.

That decision now shapes my creative practice.

Lived experience → creative approach

My lived experience informs how I read and interpret stories.

I’m a British Muslim with Pakistani heritage, a single mother, and someone who has grown up in a diverse inner-city community. I’ve supported my son through dyslexia, navigated personal and health challenges, and spent years observing people through conversation, travel and everyday life.I I have also appeared on channel 5’s documentary ‘Proud to be British’ and have worked in a local radio station.

These experiences allow me to connect deeply with narratives across genres — particularly stories dealing with identity, resilience, humanity and social themes.

When I work on a book, I’m not just responding visually. I’m listening for what’s unsaid.

How this shows up in the work

I don’t work to a fixed illustration style. Instead, I respond to each project individually, allowing the story to guide the visual language. My work often combines hand-drawn mark-making, layered textures, symbolism and pattern to create images that feel emotionally grounded rather than polished for polish’s sake.

Just as every author’s voice is unique, each piece of work I create is shaped by the story it serves.

I’ve worked across fiction and non-fiction and my work has been shortlisted for and recognised by industry awards. I’m trusted by clients for delivering thoughtful, high-quality illustration with care, clarity and professionalism. Above all, I’m known for being collaborative, reliable and deeply invested in the work.

Hand-drawn with heart — it’s my way of working.

It’s about care, connection and creating images that help stories reach the people they’re meant for.
