Exciting News: Longlisted for the Association of Illustration Awards!
I am thrilled to share that I have been longlisted for the prestigious Association of Illustration Awards! This recognition is an incredible milestone for me, and it’s an honor to have my work acknowledged alongside such talented artists in the field. The artwork I submitted for consideration features a series of portraits I created to celebrate Black History Month as part of the Make Art That Sells course. This project was particularly meaningful to me, as it allowed me to honor and highlight the legacies of three remarkable artists: Elizabeth Catlett, Betye Saar, and Edmonia Lewis. Each of these women made significant contributions to the art world and paved the way for future generations.
Elizabeth Catlett was a celebrated sculptor and printmaker known for her powerful depictions of the African American experience. Her work is a profound reminder of the strength and resilience within her community, and I sought to capture that spirit in my portrait.
Betye Saar, a pioneering mixed-media artist, uses her art to challenge and critique societal norms. Her work often addresses themes of race, gender, and spirituality, and her fearless approach to controversial subjects inspired me greatly as I illustrated her portrait.
Edmonia Lewis holds a special place in history as one of the first African American female sculptors to gain recognition in the 19th century. Her work frequently drew on her mixed heritage and addressed themes of identity and culture. Portraying her was a chance for me to connect with the narratives of strength and resilience that define these women. Creating these portraits was not only an artistic endeavor but also a personal journey. I immersed myself in research about their lives and contributions, allowing that knowledge to inform my artistic choices. Being longlisted for the Association of Illustration Awards serves as a wonderful affirmation of my efforts and dedication to honoring these influential figures. It’s a reminder of the importance of representation in art and the power it holds in shaping narratives and inspiring change. I hope these portraits resonate with others as much as they do with me. I am excited to continue exploring and creating work that highlights the rich tapestry of diverse voices in our artistic community.
