Bringing History to Life: Illustrating the Book Cover for ‘Black and British’ by David Olusoga

Using the Associationof Illustrators book briefs as inspiration I did a self initiated book cover. I illustrated and designed the book cover and hand drew the title for ‘Black and British: A Forgotten History’ by David Olusoga. This significant work explores the rich and often overlooked contributions of Black individuals and communities throughout British history, and I was honored to play a role in conveying its powerful message through visual design. From the moment I delved into the pages of Olusoga’s book, I was inspired by the depth of research and the profound stories that challenge the traditional narratives of British history. The book highlights how interconnected the histories of Black and British identities are, illuminating the resilience, creativity, and contributions of Black people over the centuries. For the cover design, I aimed to create a visual representation that captured the essence of Olusoga's compelling narrative. I wanted the imagery to reflect both the historical significance and the contemporary relevance of the themes presented in the book. My goal was to create a striking cover that would draw readers in and encourage them to engage with the stories within. To achieve this, I used a cotton texture and abstract patterns to reflect the diversity of experience of the people. The design aims to celebrate the past while also inviting readers to reflect on the present and the ongoing journey toward recognition and equality.

Throughout the creative process, I was mindful of the importance of representation. It was essential to me that the cover conveyed authenticity and respect for the individuals and stories being represented. I spent time researching visuals and symbols that could effectively communicate the book's themes, all while ensuring that the final design was both engaging and thought-provoking. I experimented with several other cover design.

Working on this project was a deeply rewarding experience. It reinforced my belief in the power of art to educate and inspire change. David Olusoga’s work is not only an essential addition to the literature on race and history in Britain but also a call to recognize and celebrate the contributions of Black individuals in shaping the nation. I am incredibly proud of the final cover design and hope it resonates with readers, sparking curiosity and encouraging them to explore the rich tapestry of Black history in Britain. This project has further fueled my passion for illustrating works that amplify diverse voices and narratives.
