Exploring Manchester: My Book Cover for ‘20 Walks in Manchester’
I did a passion project: the book cover design for ‘20 Walks in Manchester’, created for the Association of Illustrators’ brief. This project was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the vibrant and dynamic spirit of Manchester. From the outset, I wanted the design to reflect the playful, energetic atmosphere of Manchester. The city is known for its rich history, diverse culture, and lively streets, so I focused on using bold colors to highlight these elements. I aimed to create a cover that would instantly grab attention and convey a sense of fun and excitement—qualities that are intrinsic to the Manchester experience. To begin, I brainstormed various visual elements that represent Manchester, such as iconic architecture, lush parks, and urban landscapes. I incorporated these elements into my design, arranging them in a way that conveys movement and the sense of wandering through the city. Each illustration was infused with personality, reflecting the unique character of different neighborhoods and the delightful surprises that await those who explore. The color palette played an essential role in my design process. I opted for vibrant yellows, pinks, and oranges—colors that represent the city’s lively energy and appeal. These bold hues not only make the cover pop but also evoke a sense of curiosity, inviting readers to delve into the adventures within the book. Once the initial elements were in place, I combined the illustrations with hand-lettered typography for the title. This added a personal touch to the design and enhanced the overall liveliness of the cover. The combination of bold colors and expressive lettering creates a cohesive look that embodies the spirited essence of Manchester.
