Using Hand-Drawn Pisces Zodiac Illustrations in Journals and Editorial Design
In a world of fast content and digital noise, books still offer something rare: space to pause, reflect and connect. As an illustrator working within the book world, I'm always thinking about how images can support that quieter, more human experience.
These zodiac illustrations were created as full-page editorial artworks, designed to open chapters or introduce themed sections within journals, guided books and reflective non-fiction.
Why I created this work
I've always been drawn to symbolism as a way of storytelling. The zodiac offers a shared visual language
- one that speaks about personality, cycles, growth and contradiction without needing explanation.
Rather than approaching these illustrations as decorative motifs, I created them as intentional, full-page artworks. Each piece combines hand lettering, colour and symbolic form to create a moment of stillness before the reader begins to write or reflect.
How the illustrations are used
These illustrations are designed to function as chapter openers or section dividers within books.
Paired with reflective prompts or journaling space, they:
set emotional tone
slow the reader down
create a sense of ritual and entry into a new theme
The spread shown here demonstrates how illustration and text can work together - image on one page, reflection on the other - allowing the reader to engage visually before engaging intellectually or emotionally.
Technique and approach
All illustrations are hand drawn, using layered textures, pattern and colour. I intentionally avoid overly polished or digital perfection, as the slight imperfections of hand-drawn work mirror the human experiences these books explore.
My approach is always story-led. Whether working on fiction, non-fiction or journal-based projects, I look for visual language that supports the reader's emotional journey rather than overpowering it.

Illustration in books is not just decorative. When used thoughtfully, it can:
