The Adventures of a Young Naturalist Book Cover | Hand-Drawn Illustration & Dust Jacket

Hand-drawn book cover and dust jacket for The Adventures of a Young Naturalist, inspired by travel, wildlife and a lifelong curiosity for nature

The Adventures of a Young Naturalist — Book Cover & Dust Jacket Design

This book cover for The Adventures of a Young Naturalist was created to capture a sense of curiosity, discovery and wonder for the natural world, reflecting both the spirit of the author and the joy of observing nature with fresh, attentive eyes.

Concept and Imagery

At the heart of the design is a hand-drawn illustration of the vehicle associated with David Attenborough’s early fieldwork, surrounded by animals, plants and flowers. This imagery was chosen to evoke movement, exploration and a life spent travelling through landscapes in search of understanding.

The composition suggests a journey rather than a static moment — a young naturalist setting out into the world, guided by curiosity, patience and respect for nature.

Hand-Drawn Lettering and Natural Forms

The title is hand lettered using organic, branching forms, inspired by trees and natural growth patterns. This allows the typography itself to feel alive and connected to the environment, rather than imposed upon it.

By drawing the lettering by hand, I wanted the reader to feel the same sense of care, observation and intimacy that runs through the book — the idea that nature reveals itself slowly if you take the time to look.

Colour, Texture and Tone

The colour palette and textures are soft, layered and tactile, reflecting the quiet beauty of the natural world rather than spectacle. Subtle imperfections and pencil marks are intentionally left visible, reinforcing the idea that this is a story rooted in lived experience, fieldwork and close attention.

Hand Drawing as Process

Every element of the cover was drawn by hand, mirroring the values at the core of the book: patience, observation and connection. The hand-drawn approach allows the cover to feel human and personal, echoing the voice of a young naturalist discovering their place in the world.

Dust Jacket Design

This project also includes a full dust jacket design, extending the illustration and hand lettering across the front, spine and back. The imagery wraps around the book to create a cohesive object, allowing the reader to experience the story as a physical artefact — not just a single cover image.

Conceptual Intent

This cover was designed to appeal to readers who value nature, storytelling and thoughtful observation. It aims to communicate warmth, curiosity and accessibility, while honouring the legacy of a life spent paying attention to the natural world.

The result is a book cover that feels inviting, reflective and quietly adventurous — much like the book itself.
