This illustrated cookbook cover for Madame Choux was created to celebrate the joy, playfulness and pleasure of baking, rather than presenting food as overly polished or intimidating.
Concept and Approach
The concept centres around approachability and fun. Baking is often about experimentation, mess and delight, and I wanted the cover to reflect that spirit. The hand-drawn cake illustration acts as a warm, inviting focal point, instantly communicating what the book is about while keeping the tone light and welcoming.
The title lettering was drawn by hand to mirror the tactile, personal nature of baking itself — imperfect, expressive and full of character. Rather than relying on rigid typography, the lettering feels as though it has been crafted with the same care as the recipes inside.
Colour Palette and Mood
I chose a palette of pinks to convey warmth, sweetness and joy, while avoiding anything overly saccharine or glossy. The colour choice supports the playful tone of the book and gives the cover a confident, contemporary feel that stands out on the shelf.
The softness of the pinks is balanced with bold line work, ensuring the cover feels both fun and grounded.
Hand-Drawn Technique
Every element of the cover was hand drawn, reinforcing the idea of craft and human touch. This approach creates a strong emotional connection between the reader and the book, echoing the hands-on nature of cooking and baking.
Conceptual Intent
This cover was designed to appeal to home bakers and food lovers who want to enjoy the process as much as the end result. It positions the cookbook as something joyful, accessible and full of personality — a book that invites you into the kitchen rather than instructs from a distance.
The final design balances playfulness with clarity, making it suitable for a contemporary cookbook market while retaining warmth and charm.
