Illustrated Book Cover
This book cover for Anthology of Nature Poems was created to reflect the spirit of Romanticism at the heart of his work — an emotional, contemplative connection to nature, memory and the inner life.
Concept and Interpretation
Rather than illustrating a specific poem, I wanted the cover to evoke the feeling of nature’s poetry: gentleness, wonder, and quiet reflection. The hand-drawn floral forms reference the natural world that so often anchors his writing, while also symbolising growth, transience and the passing of time.
The flowers are not rigidly botanical but slightly dreamlike, allowing the imagery to sit between reality and imagination — a space that feels true to Wordsworth’s poetic voice.
Colour and Mood
I chose a palette of soft pastel tones to create a sense of calm, lightness and emotional openness. These colours support the themes of nostalgia, reverie and tenderness found throughout Wordsworth’s poetry, inviting the reader into a slower, more reflective state before opening the book.
The restrained use of colour ensures the cover feels timeless rather than decorative, aligning with the enduring relevance of the poems.
Hand-Drawn Technique
All elements of the illustration, including the floral motifs and lettering, were drawn by hand. The visible line quality and gentle irregularities were intentionally preserved to maintain a human, tactile feel — echoing the sincerity and emotional honesty of the poems themselves.
This hand-drawn approach helps the cover feel intimate and personal, as though the reader is entering a private, contemplative space.
Intent
This cover was designed for readers of classic poetry and literary fiction who value emotional depth and craft. The aim was to create a book cover that feels poetic in itself — quiet, considered, and resonant — allowing Wordsworth’s work to breathe visually as well as verbally.
