Illustrating Justice: My Artistic Take on "To Kill a Mockingbird" using Penguin Archive Briefs
In my latest illustration project, I delved into the profound themes of Harper Lee's classic novel, "To Kill a Mockingbird." One of the most potent symbols in the story is the mockingbird itself, representing innocence and the idea that killing a mockingbird is an act of injustice. Inspired by this, I created an illustration where the mockingbird faces the ultimate form of justice—its demise by the very systems that should protect the innocent. To convey this message, I chose to illustrate the courtroom and gavel as a powerful backdrop. The wood of the courtroom and gavel, rich and textured, became a metaphorical representation of the weight of justice and the weight of societal judgment. I wanted viewers to feel the heaviness of the decisions being made within those walls, and the courtroom’s wood texture played a crucial role in enhancing that sentiment.
For the mockingbird, I selected gold as my primary color. The gold symbolizes not just the beauty and innocence of the bird but also serves as a stark contrast against the dark realities of the courtroom scene. By using gold, I aimed to elevate the bird's significance, emphasizing that its life—like the lives of the characters we grow to care about in the story—is precious and worth protecting. I also hand drew the title.
Additionally, I created endpapers that reflect the theme of the mockingbird. These endpapers echo the courtroom wood but incorporate subtle hints of nature, reminding viewers of the world outside the justice system—one that should be safe for all creatures. The juxtaposition of the natural world and the starkness of the courtroom reinforces the tragic consequences of societal failures and the loss of innocence. Through these illustrations, I hope to provoke thought and discussion about the nature of justice and the innocence we often take for granted. "To Kill a Mockingbird" is a timeless story that resonates with many, and my artistic interpretation seeks to honor its core messages while inviting viewers to reflect on the importance of protecting the innocent within our society. Creating these pieces has been a deep and fulfilling experience, allowing me to explore the complexities of justice through the lens of art. I look forward to sharing my illustrations with others and sparking conversations about the lasting impact of Harper Lee's powerful narrative.
